Florida’s school choice programs ensure that no child will be left behind by allowing parents to choose the best educational setting—public or private—for their child. The McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program provided over 19,850 Florida students with special needs the opportunity to attend a participating private school. The McKay Scholarships Program also offers parents public school choice. A parent of a special needs student who is dissatisfied with the student’s current school may choose to transfer the student to another public school.

summary

A class consists of fifty minutes per subject. Subjects are either 1 credit or half a credit. A credit course requires a maximum of 135 clock hours to complete. Each course includes a workbook, textbook, and or computer. Each course is based on the different types of assignments: lessons, quizzes, tests and projects. One-Credit courses consist of 10 chapters or units and each chapter/unit consists of lessons that teach the new information and give the work or problems to do. Each unit or chapter consists of three quizzes and each quiz is given after a few lessons to help the teacher determine if the student is learning. This also helps the student stay involved in the learning process. Upon completion of each chapter or unit, a test and sometimes a project are given. Projects are done based on their time and order of importance. In conclusion, a chapter or unit is equal to one-tenth of the year's subject grade.

The number of subjects required to graduate will depend on your advisor’s evaluation of your previous high school transcripts. Your advisor will prepare a lesson plan for you and it will be carried out by your assigned teachers. Upon enrollment, you will meet your teachers and they will discuss your participation in the class sessions, homework assignments, tests and projects. You will also receive your syllabus, class agenda, and study materials needed for each class or course. Some of your work will also be done on the internet, as well as communication.

Our curriculum is CITA/SACS-approved and can be customized and designed to meet the students’ specific needs to earn their High School Diploma.

Goliath Academy’s traditional classroom-setting high school program encompasses various styles of learning models and techniques. The teachers’ goals and objectives follow the school’s mission and vision. We believe in nurturing the total development of each student by meeting them at their individual levels, academically, spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. We constantly work on expanding strategies for teaching all the subjects and provide additional educational materials to strengthen our curriculums. Our teachers teach their respective subjects and place emphasis on each student's individual improvement to become independent thinkers. Goliath Academy uses SACS-approved curriculums, which are college preparatory and can be blended with each other as both curriculums are published by the same organization. Therefore, students’ are given the opportunity to graduate sooner by being allowed to continue to do school work and assignments even when they are away from the campus. As long as students’ maintain a C in all of the subjects they are enrolled in for the academic year, they are allowed to advance and accelerate in their studies by completing more assignments, projects and quizzes. The advantage of the standard “chalkboard lectures taken straight from the textbooks and workbooks and then being able to continue the work from home or wherever there is internet access via the computer-based curriculum is a great benefit. GA uses block scheduling to offer more one-on-one interaction between the teacher and the student for each subject. We pride ourselves on teaching independent thinking instead of acting submissive to the teachers’ preferences and group students, not by grade but by the variety of needs (i.e., English as a Second Language (ESL), learning disabled students, gifted students, general education students and special needs students). The teachers assess students using quizzes, tests, standardized tests and end-of-course (EOC) exams. Students are given the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT and upon graduation, college-bound students are offered the Practice PERT Test (Post-Secondary Education Readiness Test) for college entrance. More importantly, we do not believe in a rote manner of learning where students sit in chairs and listen to the teacher. Students should be actively engaged in their environment.
